You have a favorite pair of jeans, but can no longer wear them because they have become badly stained. You are desperate to remove the stains to make the jeans wearable again, but simply don't know what to do. Here are some ways to remove those pesky stains from your jeans.

Different stains and how to deal with them

Various substances can cause different kinds of stains and often the treatment for them also varies accordingly. It is important to try to deal with the stains as quickly as possible as the longer the time between the staining and its removal, the more difficult it is to remove the stains. Some stains are fairly easy to remove, while others may require some complicated steps.

• Coffee – this is usually easy to remove. Rinse out the stained area as soon as possible and use a mild soap to get the stain out. Then wash as usual and the stain should have faded if not disappeared. It may take repeated washing to remove all traces of the stain.

• Blood – remove fresh blood stains in cold, running water and then use detergent to remove the leftover stain. If the stain is old, you may need to soak the jeans for a few hours, first in plain water and then in water with detergent mixed in it. If it is very heavily stained, dilute some ammonia with water and sponge with the solution before washing it.

• Oil – should be blotted quickly to remove excess grease. Use talcum powder to soak the oil and brush it off. If detergent and water is not sufficient, use dry cleaning solvent to clean the stain.

• Lipstick – blot to remove excess. Sponge with rubbing alcohol before washing as usual.

• Nail paint – scrape off whatever comes off. Use nail polish remover or acetone to remove the stain. You may have to do this repeatedly so that the nail paint completely comes out, blotting when wet to remove the stain. Wash after the stain has come out.

• Red wine – use salt to counteract the effect of the wine. Then wash off with cold water and later launder as usual.

• Chocolate – blot off excess and then wash the stain with hot water and detergent.

Other methods of stain removal that you can try for your jeans

Many products are now available that can work on stains. Most of these are safe for use, but do read label instructions before using. Among products available are:

• Enzyme detergents
• Bleach cleaners
• Oxygen cleaners
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Stain removers
• Dry-cleaning solvents

Try these out on an inconspicuous area so that removing the stain does not bleach the jeans. There is no reason to go without your favorite pair of jeans just because they are stained. If you try everything and still cannot get rid of old or stubborn stains, it may be worth it to give them to a professional dry cleaner, stating what caused the stains and how they are in an effort to get rid of stains from your jeans.
